The process of painting walls is quite straightforward. In general, you will only need to clean the wall, prime the surface and apply a coat of your chosen paint. However, the actual work is more difficult than the simple theory. Often, enthusiastic homeowners begin this type of project and find that the final result is unsatisfactory due to common mistakes. If you find yourself in such a situation, it is advisable to consult a professional painter to restore your wall. However, if the mistake is fairly small, you might be able to fix it. Here are basic tips for managing painting mishaps.  

Cover Missed Spots

It is not uncommon for a wall to have some uncovered areas. Painting is a time-consuming and labour-intensive process which requires a lot of attention. Therefore, if one is unfamiliar with the work, they could fail to provide adequate coverage due to fatigue or distraction. This problem has an easy fix. You will only need to wait for the painted wall to dry. Then, apply a fresh layer over the overlooked area. Do not try to correct the mistake before the coat dries because the edges around the spot will be damaged. If you are not satisfied with the level of coverage over your whole wall, you should use another paint coat.

Sand and Repaint

The fresh coat of paint on your residential walls can be ruined by localised imperfections. For instance, bubbles of air might be trapped under the paint forming blisters. It is also not unusual for the paint to drip and leave bumpy streaks, especially when one starts from the bottom. These issues must be fixed to prevent premature peeling of the paint and create an appealing look. If you notice these problems, you should give enough time for the paint to cure completely. Then, remove the bumps and blisters by scraping and sanding the affected areas. Once the zones are smooth, apply paint and make sure that it matches the surrounding parts.

Clean the Mess

Most inexperienced DIY enthusiasts will leave a mess after painting. Typically, there will be splatters around the wall, including on the trim and the windows. This problem can be prevented by applying painters tape and covering the vulnerable areas. If you notice the mess before it dries, you can wipe it off. You will need to use a commercial remover to get rid of the paint completely. If you cannot find a remover product, you can simply wait until it dries. Use a scraper to remove the splatter.
